Research | Plants: Aloe Vera

I have gathered some information from my visit to the SRC (Scientific Research Council) about the Aloe Vera plant. Some of the uses detailed in the document provided was very interesting. Here are the findings from the document:

  1. The gel is used to heal burns (nothing new here)
  2. The gel is eaten to relieve sore throat and cough.
  3. The gel is used as a mild laxative (I personally think that this part is confused with the Aloe Vera latex, Aloin, which is the thin layer of potent yellow substance underneath the skin)
  4. The boiled gel can be drunk on an empty stomach as a cold remedy.
  5. A water infusion of the gel is taken to stimulate and increase menstrual flow, to treat kidney and bladder disease
  6. A concoction of milk, honey and the gel is taken as a remedy for chest complaints, gonorrhea and leucorrhea. Another version of this concoction used for the same purpose consists of the gel beaten to a froth with egg white and flowers of Sambucus Mexicana.

  7. A slob of the gel is bound to the soles of the feet to draw out fever
  8. The heated gel is applied as a poultice on sprains.
  9. The heated gel is also taken internally to treat stomach cancer.
  10. A water infusion of the gel is used as eye drops to dispel inflammation.
  11. A decoction or syrup made from the roots is a domestic remedy for bowel and chest complaints. The root decoction is also used to expedite delivery in difficult child birth.
  12. In Trinidad, the gel infused in stout to be used as a remedy for jaundice.
  13. The gel infused in rum is used as a remedy for pneumonia.
  14. In Jamaica, the boiled gel is used for biliousness and pneumonia.
  15. In Bahamas, the gel is eaten with salt as a laxative and blood purifier.
  16. In North Caicos, the potent yellow substance (the latex) is used to treat syphilis.
  17. In Curacao, the latex is taken as a remedy for gallbladder trouble.
  18. In Yucatan, the heated leaves are applied to boils and abscesses.
  19. Aloe Vera is used in many creams, lotions and other cosmetic products (this I already know and is conspicuous)
  20. Aloe Vera is used as an ingredient in the compound, Tincture Benzoin.
  21. The freshly drained latex is bacteriostatic - A bacteriostatic agent or bacteriostat, abbreviated Bstatic, is a biological or chemical agent that stops bacteria from reproducing, while not necessarily killing them otherwise - but loses this property quickly unless it is heated for 15 minutes and freeze dried after which it is active and stable.

Operations | Structure: Soil Management

One of the most important foundation component of agriculture is the soil. The soil has three main purpose: retain water for the plants, provide nutrients to the plant and give physical support to the plant. Soil contains many minerals in it that is vital for plant growth. Soils differ in different regions because it contains one type of mineral more than other soil in other regions. This kind of mineral can come from volcanic activity as well as weathering activity. Soil has layers (or horizons). At the very top, humus can be found which is rich in organic matter (usually decomposing plant and animal matter). As we go deeper below the surface, the soil particles become bigger until we hit rocks (the parent material of soils). Soil is made up of sand, silt and clay. All sand, silt and clay are not the same. Sand is bigger in (particle) size than silt and silt is bigger in (particle) size than clay. The perfect soil for agriculture is said to be 40% sand, 40% silt and 20% clay, which is...
